Shapewear isn't one-size-fits-all — and the wrong piece is exactly why so many women give up on it. It rolls down, digs in, or flattens the curves you actually want to keep. The trick isn't "more compression." It's matching the style of shapewear to your body, your outfit, and what you want it to do. Here's how to get it right the first time.
1. Start with the outfit, not the body
Before anything else, ask what you're wearing over it. A bodycon dress needs full, seamless smoothing from bust to thigh. High-waisted jeans only need waist-and-tummy control. A backless top needs low-back or strapless coverage. Buying shapewear without the outfit in mind is the number one reason it ends up in a drawer.
2. Know your three main styles
Seamless bodysuits are your everyday workhorse — invisible under clothing, light-to-medium smoothing, breathable enough for all day. If you want one piece that does the most, start here. Our Seamless Adaptive Sculpt Bodysuit covers this lane.
Sculpt-and-lift bodysuits add targeted shaping — lifting the bust and rear while smoothing the waist. Ideal if you want shape, not just compression. See the Sculpt & Lift Adaptive Bodysuit.
Fajas (full-body compression) deliver the firmest hold for special occasions, postpartum support, or a dramatically snatched waist. Our Comfort Sculpting Faja Bodysuit is built for this.
3. Match compression to comfort
Light compression smooths and is comfortable for 8+ hours. Firm compression sculpts harder but isn't meant to be worn all day, every day. If you're new to shapewear, start with medium — you can always size into firmer styles once you know how your body responds.
4. Get the size right (most people don't)
Shapewear should feel snug, not painful. If it rolls down or cuts in, it's too small — not too big. Always check the brand's size chart against your current measurements, and when you're between sizes, size up. Tighter does not mean more effective; it means more discomfort and more rolling.
5. Don't forget breathability
The fabric matters as much as the fit. Breathable mesh panels and four-way stretch keep you cool and let the garment move with you, which is the difference between wearing it all day and tearing it off by lunch.
The quick cheat sheet
- Everyday under clothes: seamless bodysuit, light-medium compression
- Event or photos: sculpt-and-lift bodysuit
- Maximum snatch / postpartum: full-body faja
- Between sizes: always size up
