Good shapewear is an investment, and the compression that makes it work — the four-way stretch and elastic fibers — is exactly what harsh washing destroys. Treat it right and a single piece holds its shape for years. Here's how to wash and store yours so it keeps sculpting like new.
Hand washing is best
The gold standard is a cool hand wash. Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water, add a small amount of gentle detergent, and gently swish the garment for a few minutes. Avoid wringing or twisting — that breaks down the elastic fibers that give shapewear its hold.
If you must use a machine
Life happens. If you machine wash, always: use a mesh laundry bag, select the delicate or hand-wash cycle, wash in cold water, and turn the garment inside out. Wash shapewear separately from items with zippers or hooks that can snag the fabric.
The things that quietly ruin shapewear
- Hot water: heat degrades elastic and kills compression — always cold or lukewarm.
- The dryer: high heat is the fastest way to wreck stretch fabric. Never tumble dry.
- Fabric softener: it coats the fibers and reduces their stretch and breathability.
- Bleach: breaks down the fabric and discolors it.
Drying and storage
Always air dry. Lay the garment flat or hang it to dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Once dry, store it flat or loosely rolled rather than crumpled or stretched over a hanger by the straps, which can deform them over time.
How often should you wash it?
Because shapewear sits against the skin, wash it after every one to two wears. Rotating two or three pieces gives each one time to fully recover its shape between wears — another reason owning a couple of styles pays off.
